Afghanistan's Bluff
Wonseuk her
Afghanistan has never been considered a developed country. The country was torn apart several times due to countless damages from numerous warfare. However, with support of countries, Afghanistan may possibly be able to reconstruct their country, secure safe environment for civilians, and become part of countries that are considered developed. However, there are minor conflicts between the Afghan government and the United States government. Afghanistan is refusing to sign a bill, which will permit the NATO and the United States troops to prolong their stay in the Afghanistan territory. Although Afghanistan may believe they are capable of rebuilding their country on their own, refusing to sign the bill the United States offered will only delay the independent and peaceful Afghanistan people desire.

Hamid Karzai, the president of the Afghanistan, officially refused to sign the BSA, the bilateral security agreement. He stated at the parliament that not signing the bill would most likely bring peace. Also, additionally, he stated that 93% of the protections are done by the Afghanistan troops. Therefore, they concluded that they are capable of securing safety on their own. However, there are few details Hamid Karzai forgot. There are lurking variables. It is a possibility that the Afghan troops are capable of securing peace on their own. However, there is another possibility that they were able to maintain peace due to the fact that they have strong powerhouse called the United States behind them. Such factors can contribute to the safety. However, in a situation where no one knows the true factor that contributed to the peace, asking for the United States’ withdrawal is a very risky move (Mujahid).
Complete withdrawal of the United States troops will occur. This is called zero option. From Afghanistan’s point of view, zero option will do no benefit. Due to involvement of many countries, Afghanistan was granted an environment for developing. For example, in 2001, the Afghanistan was able to have their first taste of democracy due to removal of Taliban. What allowed the Afghanistan government to develop democracy was due to the presence of the United States. U.S. assisted in developing such fragile democracy to decent democracy. However, it is yet still fragile. Departure of the United States will cause the democracy to fall, causing chaos all over again. Therefore, Hamid Karzai should realize that all the works they’ve done is not their work, but the United States’ that have been helping them for over a decade (Mujahid).
Without the support of the United States, Afghanistan’s economy would have showed minimal growth. For example, rebuilding infrastructure allowed sectors such as telecommunication to produce the greatest revenue. Also, currently, Afghanistan’s GDP is twenty billion dollars. However, back in 2001, their GDP was one billion dollar. Such rapid growth would not have been possible if Afghanistan was trying to rebuild their economy on their own. Additionally, sixty percent of the citizens can now access to health service, which was nine percent during 2002. And now, after receiving so much aid from the United States, Afghanistan is asking them to leave. Though Afghanistan may no longer require the United States’ assistant, I believe it’s almost rude from Afghanistan side to treat the United states that have been assisting for past decade in such manner (Mujahid).
As you can see, the Afghanistan has received in aid in multiple fields. Though those sectors are decent compared to past, from other countries’ point of view, it is still lacking many elements. In order to allow further improvement, the presence of the United States is essential. Hamid Karzai should stop his bluff, realize the true reason for their success, and sign the bill.
