An Expensive War
Achmad Yudisthira
After the incident of 9/11, many have known how it caused hundreds of lives to be taken away, but the death toll doesn’t end there. The havoc of 9/11 sent shockwaves around the globe, announcing a war on terrorism. Since terrorism is hard to notice, and are living amongst civilians, their lives are not guaranteed for safety in the war. Many people thought of how an all out war for terrorism would bring peace to the world, but sadly, everything happens with a cost. In a catastrophe that killed hundreds, there was a far deadlier war that was coming.

Following the incidents of 9/11, the US quickly invaded Afghanistan. It was thought that the war was only fought between terrorists against the military, but it was more than just that. The war caused thousands more deaths than that of 9/11, and it was known to be the most expensive war. Insurgents or jihadists did not dominate the death toll in Afghanistan, but instead, it was civilians of Afghanistan that felt the shockwave.
The Afghan war has been going on for about 12 years, and is still ongoing now. The war caused a collapse in America’s economy, and it cost trillions of dollars to support the war. The total of Iraq and Afghanistan war totaled up to 6 trillion dollars, which makes it the most expensive war in US history. Thousands of US army was deceased, and also thousands of civilian casualties. The war against terrorism didn’t just happen in America, all the governments around the world promised to fight the terrorism. Like any other wars, does the Afghan war cause more profit or loss?
When president Bush declared the war in 2001, he specifically said that the war was not against all the Muslims but a war against evil. Even though their main focus was fighting off these violent aggressors, civilian Muslims was still affected by it. Like in the event of 9/11, many children and women was killed in the war, which make this “an eye for an eye” war. The war in Afghanistan caused more government problems, more terrorism worldwide, and many civilian casualties, which makes us think, is this war necessary at all?
The Afghanistan war caused a lot of more terrorism in the world, as they form their own groups in different countries. For example, the Al Shabaab was formed in Africa, the Islamiyah was formed in Indonesia, and Boko Haram in Nigeria. Many of these terrorist groups were formed because they have more “hatred” towards the Americans than ever before. This war not only caused problems economically in America, but it also caused problems worldwide.
In conclusion, I think that the Afghan war itself was unnecessary, as it is long, bloody, and unprofitable. The most important achievement of this ongoing war was only for killing the Al-Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden, but apart from that, it is nothing but havoc within and outside America. The war was supposed to be only against the “axis of evil” as President Bush said, but the total toll of civilian casualties is unacceptable.
